Empowering Future Scientists: WaPOR Training at USPCASW, Sindh

On 17 April 2025, undergraduate students in Environmental Science at the U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCASW), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, participated in a training session focused on the WaPOR portal.
The session, delivered by Mr. Asad Abid as part of Dr. Arjumand Zaidi’s Environmental Informatics course, introduced WaPOR’s global coverage, spatial and temporal resolutions, and its multiple data components related to evapotranspiration. Students learned to work with Actual Evapotranspiration and Interception (ETIa) and explored how to download and analyze WaPOR datasets to support agricultural monitoring and irrigation management.
Participants also discussed the role of the Sindh barrage system and how WaPOR data can aid in improving water conservation and food security across the province. The training empowered students to integrate local data with WaPOR tools, fostering a new generation of professionals capable of applying remote sensing to tackle environmental and agricultural challenges in Pakistan.
